Guelph Lantern Festival (part 1)

January 31, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Celebrate the seasons at the first Guelph Lantern Festival

The Guelph Lantern Festival is a new community event that celebrates the seasons and hopes to bring people together for an illuminating experience.  Inspired by the Kensington Market Winter Solstice event, organizers want your help to light up Guelph during one of its darkest months.

A lantern-making workshop will be held on Saturday January 31st at Hope House, Norfolk Street between 10am and 5pm.   Folks can get crafty and make simple or elaborate lanterns with the guidance of experienced lantern-makers from Red Pepper Spectacle Arts.  Using tissue paper and bamboo, and lit by LED lights (no candles), this is a fun activity for all ages.  This is a non-profit PWYC workshop and all materials and instruction is provided.  A suggested donation of $10 will go directly back into the event and help cover the costs of the workshop.

In collaboration with community partners Hillside Inside and the Downtown Guelph Business Association, organizers invite lantern-makers back to downtown Guelph on Saturday February 7th for a beautifully-lit walk.  Meeting at St George’s Square at 6.15pm, participants will light their lanterns and make their way to Allen’s Mill (River Run centre) for hot drinks and treats.  There are a few surprises along the way that herald the changes in the season.  Volunteer organizer Bree Woods says ‘this is a great opportunity to engage with the community and celebrate the changes that each season brings’.
