Herbal Medicine and Wildcrafting – CANCELLED

July 13, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Calendula flower essential oil and tinctureWildcrafting is a union between an ancient survival skill and modern botany.  Many of these useful and medicinal plants grow just outside our doors, but we usually consider them weeds.  Knowing how to use these plants for medicinal use is an important skill to build family and communities resiliency.

To help us gain a deeper understanding of how to use these gifts from the land, we welcome Scott Reid from Althaea Herb Farm.  Scott comes with a ton of experience and has completed programs at the Dominion Herbal College and the North East School of Botanical Medicine.

In the morning, we’ll be at Scott’s herb farm at Ignatius Jesuit Centre.  You will learn how to identify approximately 10 plants, several of which you will use in the hands-on, processing portion of the workshop.

You’ll gain knowledge in:

  • Identification
  • Wildcrafting Techniques
  • Ethics and Picking
  • Safety
  • Dosage
  • Contraindications and therapeutic indications

In the afternoon, we’ll head to Artisanale French Country Cooking to enjoy a delightful lunch. Afterwards, we’ll delve into preparation techniques.

You’ll learn:

herbs

  • Tea
  • Tinctures
  • Oils
  • Salves
  • Storage methods for these preparations
  • Safety
  • Dosage
  • Contraindications and therapeutic indications

This portion of the day will be a combination of hands-on activity and demonstrations by Scott.
