It Starts With Us: Decolonizing Ourselves (with Sâkihitowin Awâsis (Cortney Dakin)

July 3, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

This participatory workshop will assume a basic understanding of colonization and assimilation policies. We will compare and contrast anti-colonialism and decolonization, as well as explore Anishnaabek concepts integral to these intersecting movements. This will provide a basis for understanding the source of inherent rights and responsibilities, as well as the role this framework has in direct action and grassroots organizing. Lastly, strategies for identifying, resisting, and responding to cultural appropriation will be discussed.

Please note that the space will be smudged at the start of the workshop.

Sâkihitowin Awâsis (Cortney Dakin) is an Oji-Cree Métis spoken word artist, writer, and freedom fighter currently cultivating resistance to the tar sands pipelines locally and illegal occupation of Indigenous lands globally. She is continuously inspired by acts of resurgence and community healing.
